Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
As planned, two of the men in the cell decide to visit the hospital Chris may get a liver function check and visit the sick with Joshua, who plans on counseling.
As the men arrive in the afternoon, they find the hospital in a flurry of activity. The nursing staff and doctors that you see where paper face masks. Any one coughing or displaying signs of the flu are hurried into a mask and sequestered into a separate waiting room.
You wait in a line to speak to the nurse registering the sick. As you approach her, you note that the matronly African American woman appears harried, over worked and tired. She glances at you inquisitively as you approach.
You realize that in order to get to the wing with the sick, you'd have to impress upon her why. She'd also be able to get Chris in to see a doctor.

"Hey I'm here to get a liver function check. Just let me know what I need to do."
Chris looks around nervously. He hoped that he didn't catch this dangerous flu while he is here.

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
Joshua practically oozed a sort of serene patience that seemed to leave a faint impression everywhere he went. His youthful face was set in a gently concerned expression, and he stepped in, glad to hear that Chris was finally taking the idea that he might have been hurt seriously. Perhaps he was feeling better. The strange, obsessive and unpredictable behaviour was somewhat concerning, and occasionally boardering on outright mental illness. He would need to keep a close eye on the state of Chris' mental health. He silently prayed for guidance.
Then he made eye-contact with the harried looking woman and smiled engagingly. "Good afternoon. I'm sorry to see it's so hectic in here. My name's Reverend Joshua Haldor, I'm from St. Jude's, in the city. We do a sickness ministry in the hospitals around the city?"

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
The woman glanced from Chris to Joshua. Her eyes hitch on Joshua's face for a minute, taking a pause to consider his request.
She glances down on a piece of paper, scrolling down to a certain line.
"Our best Doctor in internal medicine is assisting with the overflow at the moment. I can get you an appointment for tomorrow morning at 11 A.M. That way the doctor can have time to review your files," She looks up to Chris, a compassionate look on her face as she passes him a clipboard to fill out his information.
"-and you don't have to risk coming in contact with the illness for your test."
Her eyes move back to Joshua.
"That would be wonderful. I'm sure it would be very uplifting- most of the ill are at high risk. I'd have to request that you and your friend wear masks and stay away from the cordoned off areas where the doctors are tending the sick. Privacy reasons.
Yet several have been admitted and would likely appreciate a ray of hope."

Joshua nodded respectfully. "Of course, I'd be perfectly willing to comply with any safety regulations you might have. I just think that in such desperate and trying times, people could use a little comfort and relief. Not just the patients, of course. I understand how traumatic such times can be for the staff, as well," he said softly, his voice full of compassion.

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
The woman's face softens, the hard lines of stress easing in the presence of someone who understands.
"The staff are quite stressed with the sickness - and then that terrible attack. The violence in the streets isn't helping." She murmurs the last sentence, as to keep her coworkers from hearing her admit her fallibly.
"Why don't you wait for your friend to finish that paperwork and bring it up to me. I'll be able to walk you over to the wing then."

Chris finishes up the paperwork and hands it in to the nurse. He looks over to the Priest.
"I think I'm going to wait around and get this test done. Don't let me slow you down, I'm sure we'll be able to meet up later."

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
The nurse seems surprised that Chris rejects the appointment option, but hands Chris a sheet of paperwork. "Wait in Internal Medicine waiting room.' She tells him. "It will probably be a few hours. Todays busier than tomorrow will be,"
She walks over to a co worker and informs them that she is leaving the desk. Walking around to the patient side of the waiting room, she approaches Joshua.
"I'll take you to the patients. Are you visiting any one in particular?"

"You know what. I think I'll just make an appointment for tomorrow afternoon." Chris says, after noticing the long line.
He looks at the Priest.
"I don't think we're here to see anyone in particular. So wherever they need us should be fine."

"I'll take you to the wing then. Please be respectful of their privacy if they don't wish to talk. We do our best to keep up their hopes .." The nurse hesitated as she turned to make sure you were following her.
"- yet they are perceptive. They know we're only able to treat the symptoms. No one's recovered despite the medicine that should have led to a full recovery."
She has led you to an outer door opened by an electronic lock. A small disinfectant station had been set up against the wall here.
The nurse washes her hands and dons double gloves.
"Wash up." She suggests, reaching into a small box and pulled out plastic wrapped face masks.
"And don these. Gloves are over there. I'd strongly advise against touching any one skin - to - skin. Do you have any questions?"

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
Joshua washed up carefully, pulling the gloves on, and then the face-mask. He knew it was uncomfortable, but he'd visited the dying in ICU before, and it was more than necessary. It was for the health of everyone he might come in contact with afterwards. As he had no wish to be a Typhoid Mary of any kind, he was fastidious about following the nurse's instructions.
"No, thank you. I do appreciate your taking the time to walk us through the proper proceedure. Once I've done rounds of the ward, I'd be happy to set aside some time for you, or any other staff member who might need it," Joshua said gently.

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
Chris does likewise. He seems a bit more apprehensive about catching the flu.

Re: Visiting the sick: Chris and Joshua
"Thats very thoughtful of you." The woman replied. "I'm Megan McCabe. You'll find me back at reception or you can ask someone to page me. I'll let the others know about your offer. I know several who could benefit from some counseling that isn't paid by the hospital." She gives a weary smile.
She steps forward and slides her badge through the magnetic lock. The doors automatically swing outwards and she proceeds within.
The doors close behind you as you step inside the ward. The hallway has two doctors reviewing charts as they pass each other in the hall. You note every one here adheres to the strict precautions against catching the flu.
"The first doors here are the children." Megan says to you. "This is Lucy Rydel." She indicates the first door. "She's five, the youngest of three children. Her parents are here as often as they can be."
She indicates the door across from Lucy.
"This is Michael Felding. He's eight years old and is putting on a brave face. His older siblings are his caregivers as his parents passed away some time ago. He's been here the longest of every one, nearly six days. He's been a good sport, but you can tell he's holding in a great deal of his fears."
"I can introduce you to the children now; or we can meet the doctors in charge of their care."
