Road Trip Empty Road Trip

Post by Kazakin Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:50 pm

Alastor Grimm felt like he'd been driving for years. He was tired, worn-out, and the old wounds were aching on his body. He ran his hand around the neatly stitched slash on his wrist. The wound was a couple of weeks old by now, but it wasn't fully closed and it stung when he flexed. The deeper ones on his shoulders throbbed intermittantly. The car felt cramped and hot, as though he was practically sat on top of the man next to him. It might have had something to do with the attitude. He'd had to drive the whole distance himself after that... well, fiasco wasn't the best word for it, but it was damned close. He could feel his tainted blood beneath the surface, boiling. His body temperature was probably above normal, he thought frustratedly. It would have helped if he could have had a small break.

"You're still awake?" He said wearily. The old bastard hadn't volunteered to drive, either. Of course, he probably wanted Alastor to keep his hands on the wheel, he thought to himself. He couldn't seem to shake him, though, and regretfully, he had saved the other man's life on occasion. The Aswang had caused... problems. That idiot boy had made everything go wrong, of course, and it had meant it seemed a very bad idea to stay in the area. The fire had spread... He wiped his forehead on his sleeve.

He was still too hot. He hadn't felt cool since... well, since the fight. He had an uncomfortable feeling his Infernal heritage had been aggressively interfered with, and something was going to happen soon. He hoped the Guardian wasn't around when it happened. He'd probably scream demon and slit his throat. No, he would most definitely scream demon, Alastor thought, sickeningly.

Alfred was disgruntled as well, albeit for a different reason to tainted companion. He leant back against the car seat, eyes closed though his fingers danced across the hilt to his precious Keris. With their abrupt departure there were few things that he had had to leave in his Curio shop - had he been given his way, he would have remained for another two or three weeks in order to settle his affairs. That much had not been afforded him, and instead he had to rely on other people to correctly and carefully package his items and store them until he could collect them himself.

He favoured items were with him, and only then because they were never out of his sight. The Watchful Keris disappeared from his hands, and his fingers stilled on his lap. "I am awake," Alfred confirmed smoothly.

He opened his eyes and peered around at the passing scenery. "Where are we?" the older looking man questioned calmly. On the outside he seemed perfectly, infuriatingly unperturbed. Nor did he appear to be aware of Alastor's continued discomfort.

"The outskirts of Detroit, Franklin." Alastor said shortly. He did not feel well, he thought. "I need to pull over to get gas." He added a moment later. His stomach burned. He thought he was possibly going to vomit, which for him, might end up being fire. He groaned through his teeth and sat higher in the street, scanning the streets for a gas station. He'd at least be able to get in touch with contacts here- thank God for the world being so open and intensive these days as to allow contacts from across the USA, the world even.

Job shouldn't be too bad, either. He was at least very talented, and translations were useful, modern and ancient. Considering he could speak any language known to man and some known only to ancient horrific slithering things, he was confident he could find something to do. There shouldn't be much heat following them. Thank the Lord that he'd been able to pull in a few favours from his group rather than end up arrested.

"Is it just me, or is it hot in here?" He said conversationally, sweat beading on his skin.

"Hm," Alfred murmured and grunted in a noncommital fashion. He hadn't been to Detroit before, but he imagined there would be no problems with setting up shop in this city. It was likely that a younger man would find venturing into a new area to be something of an adventure; but this relic-obssessed man scoff at such idealistic attitudes. There was work in a new city. Work, contacts and knowledge.

And Alfred adored knowledge.

"Perhaps," he acknowledged the question. "We have been in close confines for several hours." He rolled down the window.

Alastor felt a prickle of relief travel down his spine, and he took a breath of the cooler, rushing air from outside. It was no good. He could taste something metallic in the back of his throat, something almost rancid and decaying, like... like... his stomach lurched as he realised he was tasting rotten eggs, and he pulled into the gas station forecourt. He didn't say another word to Alfred as he jumped out of the car, running for the men's bathrooms. He didn't want to risk it. He knew damn well he was going to throw up.

He raced into the stall and vomited, the scent of brimstone filling his lungs and mouth as he voided his lunch. He swayed on his feet. He was burning up. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with his sleeve, gasping for breath. He was just relieved he hadn't vomited hellfire. Something was off balance. He didn't feel right. It wasn't normal. He was shaking.

As Alfred was attempting to puzzle out what could be the matter with him, he heard a sound. A rhythmic series of taps, forming some sort of catchy rhythm. He almost started to anticipate the next beat when it stopped.

"Whewie, it sure don't sound like you're all right in there." A smooth, velvety voice filled the void. "That tends to happen to folk. Be driving along, right as rain, then fate come down and plunk a rock on your head."

The unseen man on the other side of the door gives a mirthless laugh.

"But the city has all sorts of things to turn a mans luck. I know of one way..."

Alfred glanced sidelong as Alastor rushed away, and he considered not for the first time, that his younger-looking companion was of the rather bizarre persuasion. Reaching into the glove compartment, the older man pulled out a newspaper and flicked it open to begin reading. Until-

He sighed with the interruption, and with a small roll of his eyes Alfred inclined his head to listen to the inane and unwanted discourse. "I have not yet had anything... 'plunk'-," Alfred used the word with utter distaste. "On my head. I do not intend to let Fate begin now," he drawled.

If he was curious about the mysterious intruder, he made little inclination to discover more. "Nor do I tend to focus on babble, from the mouths impolite men."

"Ah, thats a terrible pity." The unknown man lamented. "I had thought that perhaps fate had brought us together. I had heard tales of someone who fancied shiny ... lets say ... baubles."

"I also know who has such a *bauble*. It was once possessed by Barnabas...perhaps once *was* Barnabas. But, alas.. I am being impolite..."

Alastor wiped his mouth again as he dry heaved. He could taste sulphur, and something sizzled along his palette. He groaned and fumbled for the flush, staggering to the sink. He stared at his reflection in the mirror. He was ash-white, sicker looking than he thought. Sweat was beading on his skin, and his already messy dark hair was stuck up in touselled points and wet.

He groaned. His skin felt like it was literally burning. He splashed cold water on his face and heard a telltale, ominous sizzling noise. Oh no... not here, not in public. He had to get somewhere secure, and fast. Something must've been triggered, maybe by his close proximity to all those blasted relics. He dashed for the car, loosening his shirt collar with one hand.

"Alfred, we need to- Who's your friend?" He stopped, his voice cold and wary.

"Dare say, wouldn't hazard Alfred would consider me a friend as yet." The tall young black man in a dark burgundy suit replied smoothly. "Perhaps more of a means to an end.

I want something to end, something terribly offensive to me. It just so happens that we may all be able to help each other."

Amber stepped out of her Bmw, it was a new model but, it was beat up as if it had been through hell. She shook nervously, looking around for a bathroom. There were things in this world that disturbed her, but she couldn't operate in this condition. She ignored all distractions and made her way to the bathroom, she didn't know if it were locked or needed a key but she was prepared to kick the door in if she needed too.

Amber wore a green dress to compliant her emerald green eyes. She pushed open the first bathroom door she saw, and didn't care if it was the boys room or the girls. She took note of the man coming out but didn't pay him any mind just yet.

As Amber shoves her way to the mens room, something blows past her need. There's this... stench. There's no other way to describe it, its truly a smell she doesn't want to be near for a moments longer.

The dense, heavy smell of sulfur is coming from the stall she only just entered.

Alfred turned just a little bit more, and it was just the slightest indication of interest. Yes, he liked baubles. He liked baubles a lot - enough to kill for. His gaze revealed the slightest interest; but it was pulled back as Alastor reappeared. "Indeed, we are not friends." His tone was cool, calm and not at all subtle in its distrust.

"On the otherhand, I am not a paranoid man. Perhaps we can converse further, in a more...hospitable environment. After that we can decide if our paths cross."

Alastor wiped the back of his hand across his forehead, looking wary. Of course there would be someone else! This day was wonderful. Just... wonderful. He frowned. Was this another Guardian? Oh, that would be just perfect. He moved restlessly towards the front seat of the car. He probably wasn't safe to be driving, he thought worriedly, but he had to get somewhere out of sight before the taint displayed itself. Surely it would hold off a little longer. Just a little. Please Lord, just a little.

"Well, why don't you simply exchange numbers and get in touch?" He said hurriedly. "It would be the ideal way, wouldn't it? Then we can stop bickering in the forecourt, aha."

Amber hadn't been in the right state of mind for a Duchovy'n mystery at this juncture, but she couldn't just ignore the smell. She sighed and shoved her compact back into her purse, she'd get her fix in a moment, she could wait a few more seconds. She instead pulled her i phone out and covertly pretended to text something while really checking the reflection of the man that just exited the bathroom. If she were lucky he'd be a vampire, and if she was luckier, she could break his legs toss him in the trunk and use him as a juice box for the next month and a half.

Amber
manages to get a clear view of the man in such a hurry. Her mirror
throws back the view of the sweating, anxious looking man. Clearly, the
man is rather unwell but among the living.

Man in Burgandy seems to consider the offer for a moment. He has stepped back as Alastor approaches, now standing facing both of you with his back towards the rest room.

"That's not a bad idea. You lot are new to town, aren't you? Why don't you come by my apartment. You could follow me, if you are worried about getting lost."

Amber didn't know who was who, all she knew is you didn't go to the bathroom to light sulfur cigarettes. She moved her fingers in a texting motion walking to her car, looking at her i phone camera looking for reflections on the 3 people conversing by the car.

As Amber walked by and worked her Iphone magic, she managed to get a clear image of the man holding a newspaper in one hand [Alfred].

Yet as she played her camera over the man in the burgundy suit, the image reflected back was of green scales. Glittering, flashing green scales - like a snake.

The man in the suit turned abruptly, scanning the rest stop warily. His eyes were narrowing with suspicion.

Turning back to the two men, he extended his invitation.
"Follow me." He stated simply. He walked to a nearby black sedan and started the car. He paused to allow the men time to start their own engine.

Amber couldn't believe what she saw. She stopped recording, and got in her car like she was done texting. She drove off casually, but waited to follow this group where they were going, she immediately got on the phone, text messaging the image she saw to anyone in the Abbey to see if they had ever heard of a creature that could do something like that. She thought for a minute scanning her own recollections of anything that could do something like that.

Alfred coughed to regain the man's attention, and gently shook his head. "In the interests of being careful, sir, we will be speaking in an area that is open and neutral." He shot a glance at Alastor, to gauge whether he had any input. Whether the other man agreed or not, there was no chance he was going to wander blindly into the stranger's lair.

"What? Oh... yes, fine, of course." Alastor got out through his teeth. "Can we make it quick, please? And I suggest that you drive..." He lurched into the back seat of the car. His chest felt like it was literally on fire. He had a horrible feeling that underneath his shirt, it might be. His bones were starting to ache. Maybe he'd luck out. Maybe the meeting would be somewhere quiet enough to sneak out and let this stop. He felt unclean, filthy. He swallowed and tasted brimstone. His vision felt shaky.

The man pauses as you speak.
"Paranoid?" The man grins, not seeming offended at all.
"There's a parking lot next to some bustling super center store. I'll pull in there and see if you follow. If not, I'm sure ol' Barnabas will find somebody else."

The unknown man heads to his black sedan. After a moment, he pulls out and heads into traffic. He drives at a sedate pace, easy enough to follow. True to his word, he pulls into a Big Box super center after a three minute drive.

He chooses a section more sparsely populated, yet a handful of cars are parked less than fifteen feet away. People push shopping carts - often straight into traffic, self absorbed to the fullest extent.

You gauge that you could attract attention if you needed it.

Amber's BMW is a bit different than the mammoth SUVs and sedans that populate the parking lot, but no one seems to give it another look. She realizes that the man has parked in a less populated area.

Assuming the car she is following follows suit, if she parks too near them she will likely attract their attention.

Amber keeps her distance. She calls her forced babysitter Gerald, a man she really couldn't stand, but he was never too far from her on her fathers orders. Maybe for once he could actually help her when she needed him instead of getting in her business when she didn't. She took time out balancing her phone on her shoulder and ear then set her compact on the dashboard. She took out a hollowed ink pen and put a little powder on the small mirror. "Come on come on come on", she said impatiently. She didn't dare get any closer until someone answered her. She waited and snorted coke in the parking lot using a dollar bill.

Alfred grunted his approval, as the mysterious man agreed to the change in location. It was probably just as well - things could have gotten messy, had he not got his way. The note about the relic had certain captured his interest, but Alfred refused to see his obsession as a weakness. His relics only made him stronger. He got behind the wheel, and drove at a steady pace after their new "friend's" car.

He pulled into the car park, just behind the black Sedan. Alfred stepped out of the car, and surveyed the area on reflex. It was certainly open, so if anything foolish was attempted... Well, there would be people around, to say the least.

Alastor kept his head down while the Guardian drove, worried that he was going to vomit again. He could feel the car shifting as Alfred made turns, grateful the car was at a steady pace. He screwed his eyes shut. For a moment, he thought he could see flames behind his eyelids, etched into the light, and made a quick decision not to keep his eyes shut at all, lest he start hearing the sounds of of the pit inside his head. He sometimes did in his dreams, and it haunted him.

He leant against the metal of the car, panting for air. He looked paler, if that were possible, and sweat was making his shirt stick to him. He swallowed, screwing up his courage. Maybe people would think he was battling a nasty case of influenza. Yes, he could hope. It wasn't obvious that he was tainted, was it? No, it couldn't be.

"Let's make this quick." He breathed to Alfred. "I'm... I'm not well..."
