Poker Night

In the backroom of a seedy dive bar, way after hours, Hugo sits drinking and playing poker with his friend and a few of his associates. The small room reeks of liquor and cigarette smoke and is light from a sing bulb dangling off a wire as well as a few old neon beer signs. The green felt of the table is dingy and torn. Poker chips scattered on the table along with beer bottles and a 5th of vodka. The bass of the jukebox in the bar can be hear in the room.

Hugo leans back in his metal folding chair and raises the corner of his cards. A two of clubs and and 8 of diamonds.He glances at the three cards laying face up on the table. He's new to playing Texas Hold'em though with beginners luck on his side he has won the past few hands. Though it seems that his luck has run dry. Unless there is some sort of miracle Hugo has no chance of a winning hand. He looks down back at his hand and then lifts his eyes to the other players checking their reactions. The room falls silent as it becomes his turn to check, fold or raise. Hugo pauses form a moment and slides a stack of chips to the center of the table.

"Raise." He says calmly and confidently and then reaches for the bottle of vodka and and takes a large swig form the bottle.

One of the associates, a stocky fellow in a gaudy silk shirt shoots you a look of disbelieving contempt. He eyes his hand cautiously, drawing impatient stares from the others.

"Fold."

He reluctantly tosses his cards down. Two of diamonds, six of hearts. Not a terrific hand. Another folds, then another. You hear the door open behind you and the others look up from their meager piles, with wary expressions on their faces. You don't see the interloper, but you can smell the booze on him, that and the coppery blood.

"Evening, Mal."

"Evening, fellas. Play your hand, don't mind me."

Your friend nods and stares your right in the eye, appraisingly.

Hugo cocks his head to the side and glances at the man who just entered and then returns his attention back to his friend. He reaches down and pulls a cigarette from his pack on the table placing it in his mouth.

"Go ahead and match. I need to get my money back from you somehow." Hugo says as the cigarette in his mouth bobs up and down while he speaks.

He lights his cigarette and takes a long drag from it.
